Coach Rodney Fowler
Coach Rodney Fowler is a San Diego–based adaptive personal trainer and strength & conditioning coach with over 20 years of experience working with athletes and individuals across all ability levels.
His coaching philosophy is built on inclusion, adaptability, and respect for the individual-helping people restore balance, confidence, and strength through movement.
Born & Raised in San Diego
Coach Rodney was born and raised in San Diego, where his passion for sports, performance, and coaching began.
Over the course of his career, he has worked at the highest levels of athletics, gaining firsthand experience as both a player and coach before transitioning into strength and conditioning.
NCAA Division I Strength & Conditioning Experience
Rodney served as an Assistant Director of Strength & Conditioning at the NCAA Division I level, working with high-performing athletes in demanding environments.
- Strength and conditioning principles
- Injury prevention and recovery
- Performance under pressure
- Individualized coaching approaches
A Life-Changing Turning Point
While coaching at the NCAA level, Rodney experienced the sudden onset of seizures and was later diagnosed with epilepsy.
This diagnosis forced him to step away from his role in collegiate athletics but it did not end his commitment to helping people through fitness.Instead, it reshaped how he viewed training, empathy, and adaptation.
From Community Parks to Purpose
After returning to San Diego, Coach Rodney continued coaching in non-traditional ways training friends in local parks during the pandemic.
As word spread, individuals within the community began seeking him out for personal training.
One of his most impactful experiences came when an 89-year-old woman asked him to train her.
“She forced me to think outside the box and train the same muscle groups in ways most traditional programs never consider.”
That experience became foundational to his adaptive coaching approach.
Discovering Adaptive & Disabled Athlete Training
Coach Rodney was later offered an opportunity to become a Strength & Conditioning Coach for San Diego State University’s Adapted Athletics Program.
At the time, his background primarily involved injured athletes and individuals dealing with chronic pain. Working within adapted athletics challenged him to grow beyond traditional sport science models.
Through this role, Rodney developed:
- Non-traditional movement strategies
- Adaptive strength training methods
- A deeper understanding of disability, access, and inclusion
A Passion for Inclusion & Empowerment
Working with disabled and para-athletes became both challenging and deeply rewarding.
Coach Rodney found purpose in:
- Challenging self-limiting beliefs
- Pushing individuals who had never been pushed before
- Breaking down societal stigmas around disability and fitness
- Creating space for inclusion within the community
This passion became the foundation of Restoring Synergy.
Coaching Philosophy
Coach Rodney believes
- Every body deserves access to quality training
